Razón Desconocida - Encuentro
“Encuentro” is the first work by this collaborative duo consisting of great musician Carlinhos (keyboardist in Papa Negro, Plumabits, Big Tools) and the sound artist of the listening Francisco “DeGoyen” Muñoz (Ondes Sintetizadores).
The work and name of the album arise from improvisations like a “ping pong game” between both members, who become alive from a popular YouTube video which was uploaded in 2020. In this video DeGoyen recorded a concrete piece of electronic music, or made of concrete, and Carlinhos used it as a base for improvising with an electrical keyboard.
“Calma”, “Agonía y Renacer” y “Devastación” comprise this whole work that could be classified into the well-used and, at the same time, elusive genre Ambient. We could even being to think that the pieces were composed while thinking of some movie or audiovisual work. Moreover, at the time of the composition of this review, this work was the soundtrack for this writer.
“Calma” kicks off the album with a synthesized voice on the right side and piano chords on the left side, contrasting the “organic” instrument and the electronic one, finding each other midway, each one from the non-existent trench.
“Devastación” is a painting of subtle textural dystopian landscapes. Delightfully, there is a synth bass line that plays between left and right. The piano emerges from behind, touched by effects from time to time, creating harmonies, chords and short phrases.
“Agonía y Renacer”. The beginning is the definition of chaos and of everything, the white noise, which is deconstructed into Carlinhos’ panned piano melodies and DeGoyen’s synths, finding each other midway again with a shimmer-ish reverb that joins both worlds, then returning to the noise which becomes deafening, noise that once died and now is reborn.
“Encuentro” is an album like no other inside Modismo’s catalog and, without a doubt, within the entire catalog of Chilean electronic music. It is risky, given the national taste in dancefloor music but at the same time, it is attuned to what is going on globally since some years ago: the re-emergence of Ambient, conceived from the other side and that gained great fervor during 2020’s pandemic.

Encuentro es el primer trabajo de este duo colaborativo entre el gran músico Carlinhos (tecladista de Papa Negro, Plumabits, Big tools) y el artista sonoro de la escucha Francisco “DeGoyen” Muñoz (Ondes Sintetizadores).
El trabajo, y el nombre del disco, nace de improvisaciones pimponeadas entre ambos miembros, que nacen por un popular video de YouTube que subieron por el 2020. En el DeGoyen grabó una pieza de música electrónica concreta, o de hormigón, y Carlinhos la utilizó como base para improvisar con un teclado eléctrico.
Calma, Agonía y renacer y Devastación componen la totalidad de este trabajo que se pudiera clasificar dentro del manoseado y a la vez esquivo género “Ambient”. Uno incluso podría pensar que las piezas fueron compuestas pensando en alguna película u obra audiovisual. Es más, durante la redacción de esta reseña, sirvió de banda sonora de quien les escribe.
Calma abre el disco con una voz sintetizada por el lado derecho y acordes de piano por el lado izquierdo, haciendo contraste entre el instrumento “orgánico” y electrónico, encontrándose en la mitad, cada uno desde la trinchera inexistente.
Devastación es una pintura de paisajes distópicos texturales delicados. Con delicia, tenemos una línea de sintetizador de bajo que juega entre la izquierda y la derecha. Por detrás está el piano afectado de cuando en cuando por efectos generando armonías, acordes y frases cortas.
Agonía y Renacer. El inicio es la definición del caos y del todo, el ruido blanco, el cual se deconstruye en melodías paneadas de piano de Carlinhos y sintetizadores de DeGoyen, nuevamente encontrándose a mitad de camino con un reverb tipo shimmer que une ambos mundos para luego retornar a un ruido que se vuelve ensordecedor, que una vez murió y ahora renace.
Encuentro es un disco como ninguno dentro del catálogo de Modismo y sin lugar a dudas, dentro del catálogo de música electrónica chilena. Es arriesgado dado el gusto nacional por la música de pista pero a la vez, se pone en sintonía con lo que ocurre a nivel mundial ya desde hace unos años: la reemergencia del Ambient, pensado desde otra vereda y que tomó gran fervor durante la pandemia del 2020.
